Annie Dillard is my favorite writer this week. I love her, because she knows how to see. Most of us walk around totally blind to the beautiful. She quotes Thoreau... "Nature is mythical and mystical always, and spends her whole genius on the least work."
Today I saw a little bit of this when I was at the dallas world aquarium. When I looked at all of the forms and colors... and life, I was blown away by such creativity.
In the words of Annie... "it occurs to me more and more that everything I have seen is wholly gratuitous. The giant water bug's predations, the frog's croak, the tree with lights in it are not in any real sense necessary per se to the world or to its creator. Nor am I... That there are so many details seems to be the most important and visible fact about the creation. If the world is gratuitous, then the fringe of a goldfish's fin is a million times more so..."
