Did I mention that all of Cincinnati is about to become overtaken by about 5 billion cicadas? Brood X makes an appearance every 17 years, and here they come. I'm trying to be excited about the crazy experience, but in truth, it kind of sicks me out. They're already starting to emerge from the ground for their six week visit. Oh, goody.
Here are some fun cicada songs. I recommend Jake Speed and the Freddies. I got to hear them play this song when I went to a chair auction last week. They were very entertaining.
Check out my new cicada photos too.
Oh, and here's a recipe to try. I've eaten grasshoppers and bees... cicadas couldn't be much worse, right?
Cicada Stir-Fry:
Ingredients
minced onion, coriander (cilantro), fresh gingerroot
sliced carrots, chopped cauliflower and/or broccoli
water chestnuts and/or other vegetables of your choice
bean sprouts and snow peas
blanched, teneral cicadas
In a wok or other suitable pan, heat a couple tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add ingredients in the order listed above when those in the most recent addition are partially cooked. Serve over whole-grain (“brown”) rice and add soy sauce to taste.
