In the past four days, I have subbed in nine different classrooms at the elementary school down the street.

Some of the memorable moments...

-catching a first grader who was pulling the glued-on fruit loops off her art project and eating them during a math lesson
-having a second grader guess that I was 86 years old
-intervening after a kindergartener purposefully cut a hole in his classmate's shirt
-being smothered with hugs by kindergarteners before they have even been introduced to me
-receiving "I love you" and "You are cool" notes from second graders
-comforting the kindergarteners who kept saying, "I miss my mom. Can I go home now?"
-getting enthusiastic waves in the hallway from students who recognize me now
-repeating my instructions dozens and dozens and dozens of times

Interestingly, this school provides free breakfast to every student. Each child is offered milk and juice along with a small "meal". Three of this week's entrees included a package of cookies, a rice krispy treat, and a donut. Pre-packaged, processed brain food.
