I was in the grocery store with my sister when she got a call on her cell phone from the principal of the school where she teaches. He told her that it would be at least another week before we would know whether or not I could work at their school. And that there was still no guarantee that things would work out. I felt so discouraged and exasperated... I really want the job working as an aide in my sister's classroom, but I also can't afford to wait another week without any real guarantees.

And then... my cell phone rang, and I realized that I had been dreaming. It was the secretary calling from the school to ask if I could come in and sub for a third grade teacher who had to leave unexpectedly. I tried to make my voice sound like I hadn't just been dead asleep (though traditionally, I have not been very successful at this), and I told her that I would be happy to come in. I explained that I had not yet been fingerprinted, and I still had paperwork to complete before I was actually cleared to work in the schools. She said to come on in anyway. Soon after I got there, the principal came up to me and told me that the long-term sub position as an aide in my sister's classroom would be officially open on Monday. Was I still interested?

Yay! I have a job! And for a temp job, its entirely ideal. I will get to work in a school, but I will have a schedule that is much more reliable than working as a regular sub. Plus, I get to work with my sister. This is such a relief.

So last night I went to see Pedro the Lion in Cambridge with Seth (an old friend from high school), Brian (a new friend from the staff at the school where I will be teaching), and Greg (one of Brian's friends). About half-way through the show there was a fire drill. At least, I think it was a drill. What I found especially interesting is that nobody seemed particularly troubled or surprised by it. Several hundred people casually and calmly moved out of the venue and stood out in the cold until we were allowed back in. Within a few more minutes, the band was playing again, and nothing was ever mentioned about the whole ordeal.

And... its been snowing all day.

Ryan, it was the first time I had seen Pedro without you there, and it just wasn't the same.
