Sierra is a little girl in my class whose three year-old brother was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer last year. He has had to go through some crazy treatments, and he is now cancer-free. From what I understand, there is a 75% chance that the cancer will return, and it is often far worse when it comes back. His parents take turns staying with Sierra here in NH and staying with her brother at a hospital in New York City (4 hours from here) for 2-3 weeks at a time. During his weeks at home, they often have to make daily trips to Boston (about an hour away) for additional treatments.
I told the rest of my students' parents about what they're going through, and they pooled together well over $700 for their family. Isn't that beautiful?
