Since it's poetry month, I've been having my first graders read, write, and memorize poetry. I've been teaching them how to identify and write metaphors and similes. This week, we went back behind our school to sit by the river and write. I fixed their spelling here, but these are entirely their own creations, in their own words. I think they're brilliant!
Here are some of my favorites:
  • The sky is like my sister's dress.
  • A butterfly is a bird that goes to God to ask what to say next.
  • A river is a snake that slithers in the woods.
  • The sun is a bright, new penny.
  • The sky is a big flowing oshen; the clouds are the splashing waves.
  • The grass is a green patch of hair.
  • The trees are like dancing ladys and dancing men, dancing with each other.
  • God himself is the sun shining down on us.
  • The wind is a whispering voice.
  • The stream is silent as a cat creeping up on a mouse.
